The inception of Rock Garden has quite a fascinating history. Nek Chand secretly began building exhibits and the garden structure near Sukhna Lake in 1957. The officer collected waste materials from around the city in his free time and used them to create the displays in an infertile area formerly forest buffer land. Nek Chand carried out his activities secretly for 18 years, and by then, his artefacts had spread across 12 acres of interlinked courtyards.

The Rock Garden was eventually discovered by the authorities in 1975 and was on the cusp of being demolished due to its illegal conception. However, public opinion deviated the authorities from their original plans, and the garden was opened to the public in 1976. Nek Chand was handed the authority over the park and had 50 labourers to help him carry out his plans. The retired government official also set up various collection centres across the city for waste collection, which was then recycled and used to create the exhibits that adorn the garden today.

The garden is divided into three phases which have exhibits made out of scrap materials such as bangles, glasses, bottles, electrical waste, tiles, sinks, ceramic pots and more. Interlinked waterfalls, cobblestone pathways and other attractions make up the Rock Garden as we know it today.

The first phase of Rock Garden consists of a labyrinth of chambers, terracotta pots and niches. This area is decorated with various sculptures in the shape of animals, birds and human figures made entirely out of tiles, broken tube lights and bangles. This stunning area offers an exciting experience through its distinct artworks, unlike any other in the world.

Phase 2

Phase 2 of Rock Garden is the most famous attraction due to the presence of a massive waterfall. This phase is also home to intricately detailed pathways, courtyards and an amphitheatre where several events occur throughout the year. Phase 2 also has a miniature village made out of waste as one of its highlights for you to enjoy.

Phase 3

Huge courtyards made out of chiselled rocks and equally large art installations of camels and elephants make up the third phase of Rock Garden Chandigarh. The picturesque artwork here is exciting and unique and should not be missed.
