Devotees have to climb up a number of stairs to reach the temple. It is believed to have been built by the Bhoja King Chandravarman. While the outer temple is a modern structure, the inner sanctum was carved out of rock within a cave. The Saptalokeshwar Temple, located in Narve, is just a short drive away from Panaji and has a rather tumultuous history. It was originally built by the Kadamba kings in the 12th century and remained an important centre of worship. The main idol was removed on several occasions for fear of desecration by the Bahamani Sultans and later by the Portuguese. However, the temple was rebuilt, and the Maratha King Shivaji eventually reinstalled the idol. While Lord Shiva is the main deity here, the most important festival celebrated at the temple is Gokulashtami, which is traditionally associated with Lord Krishna.
