Jaipur Diaries: Heritage & Hospitality at The Lalit Jaipur

Jaipur Diaries: Heritage & Hospitality at The Lalit Jaipur

The Pink City of Jaipur, India, is the capital city of the northern Indian state of Rajasthan. Jaipur was established in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. Rajasthan became a British colony officially in 1858. It remained under British sovereignty until 1947.

Jaipur got its popular title, “The Pink City,” when, in 1876, Maharaja Ram Singh got most of the city's buildings painted pink. Pink is the color of hospitality. This was actually done in the welcome of Britain’s Queen Victoria. Today, the city is known for its bazaars, forts, temples, palaces, and animal reserves.

Jaipur: Royal Charm Beyond Imagination

You can relate to Jaipur if you have ever sat in a location where history seems to be breathing all around you. It is not an extravagant city. It doesn’t shout its beauty. It just continues to exist in the way it ever has and welcomes you to stroll with it for a few moments. With The Lalit Jaipur, a 5-star hotel in Jaipur, have an authentic Rajasthani experience and live a royal legacy.

Flower merchants are setting up marigolds outside temples in the mornings. At the same time, you'll hear people in Johari Bazaar haggling about bangles in the distance. And an elderly shopkeeper could remark, "Khamma Ghani," with a grin as you pass by.  All of these instances make the city appear friendly, human, and nearly familiar to you.

Spell-Bound Visual Displays in Jaipur

You might just have heard about Amber Fort, City Palace, and Hawa Mahal. You might also have seen the photographs, maybe even planned your shoots. But the best part is not just the buildings; it’s the vibe they carry.

  • Badi Chaupad: It is a prominent public space and junction in the heart of Jaipur. Many temples and bazaars (markets), notably the well-known Tripolia Bazaar, line these streets; therefore, this is a popular destination for travelers.
  • Open Rooftop Areas: The weather in Jaipur is hot most of the year, typically topping 110°F (43°C) during the summer. Sleeping indoors without air-conditioning is virtually impossible; thus, most residences are designed with open rooftops where people sleep during the scorching evenings.
  • The Aravalli Hills: The hills extend northeast from Rajasthan to Delhi.
  • Hawa Mahal: It is called the Palace of Winds or Palace of Breezes. Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, this 5-story palace resembles the crown worn by Krishna.
  • Red and Pink Sandstone: Hawa Mahal is built with pink and red sandstone, perfectly matching with the city’s pink color theme.
  • Jharokhas: These are overhanging enclosed balconies. These are constructed with intricate lattice work. Royal women used to see the public and streets through these.
  • Multicolored Stained Glass Windows: The stained glass of windows allows sunlight to shine through and create dazzling multicolored designs on the floors, ceilings, and walls.
  • Jantar Mantar, Jaipur: The meaning of Jantar Mantar is “instruments for measuring the harmony of the heavens.” It is a blend of scientific, religious, and political power.
  • Vrihat Samrat Yantra: Vrihat Samrat Yantra can measure time in as short as two-second increments.
  • Jai Prakash: This yantra measures the movement of the sun using its shadow’s position.
  • Rama Yantra: It allows viewers to observe the position of celestial objects.
  • Amer Fort: Amer Fort was established by Raja Man Singh to safeguard Amer, Rajasthan’s capital. Structured with sandstone and marble, the fort includes four separate sections.
  • Sheesh Mahal: The Mirror Palace: At one time in the fort's history, the queen who lived there wanted to view the stars but was unable to sleep outside. Thus, glass pictures filled the ceiling and walls of the hall. When candles were lit, the room used to give the look of thousands of “stars.”
  • Mughal Garden: This garden is a classic specimen of Islamic design. It has a fountain and a star-shaped pool in the middle.
  • Jaigarh Fort: It was built to enhance the defenses of Amer Fort. It is considered as Jaipur’s strongest fort. It has thick sandstone walls, houses a massive cannon, and is also known to be connected to Amer Fort by underground passages.
  • Maota Lake: It's at the base of Amer Fort.
  • Amer Palace: It’s the historic home of the Rajput Maharajas. It is located inside Amer Fort. There is one Kali Temple in the palace.
  • Ganesh Pol: This doorway is for the private royal residential place. Vegetable dyes were used to decorate the doorway, giving it a vibrant look even today.
  • Geometric Wooden Lattice: Islamic art and architecture of repeating geometric patterns is used here. These wooden screens employ a repeating hexagonal motif. Air may pass through the screen, allowing one to view outside without being seen.
