Housed at the stunning Albert Hall located in the southern part of the old city, the Central Museum was initially designed by Sir Swinton in 1887. The design aesthetic is inspired by North Indian and English architecture, and also integrates other elements from different parts of the world. In the museum, you will find a wide array of dioramas, sculptures, carpets, miniature paintings, musical instruments and also an Egyptian mummy. The museum is open from 9am to 5pm every evening, throughout the week.
One of the most popular tourist spots in the city, Birla Planetarium packs interesting audio-visual education about stars and the solar system in a fun, exciting manner. Enjoyed by children, adults and families alike, the interactive shows at the planetarium give you an insight into the working of the solar system, getting a sense of the universe’s infinite beauty and splendour. The planetarium is dome shaped and was automated in 1993 to give special effects a natural feel. The show is run via an automated projector, creating a unique visual and auditory experience. The Birla Planetarium is open from 12:00pm to 7pm, with a special concession for students carrying a relevant identity card. The observatory here has the infrastructure to use C-14 telescope and its accessories – including ST6 CCD camera, solar filters, etc.
Laxmi Narayan Temple
The Laxmi Narayan Temple in Jaipur is counted among the most beautiful temples across North India. It was built by the Birla family, who bought the land from the erstwhile Maharaja for a token cost of Re 1. This is a sister temple to other Birla temples across Kolkata, Delhi and Hyderabad. One of the most striking features of the temple is the gorgeous depiction of Hindu scriptures on the temple’s stained glass. Lord Ganesha, considered to be the protector of households, is depicted above the sill. He can be identified through the marble from a distance itself, giving proof of the fine quality of marble used. Apart from Goddess Laxmi and Lord Narayana, you will also find other popular Hindu deities depicted in the premises. The outside walls of the temple showcase important historic figures including Christ, Buddha, Socrates and Confucius.
